OXNARD, CA — As the Dallas Cowboys gear up for the 2023 NFL season, owner Jerry Jones is voicing his confidence in the team’s revamped offense and its potential to elevate star quarterback Dak Prescott’s performance.
The Cowboys severely changed their coaching staff in the offseason, as they saw offensive coordinator Kellen Moore depart. They now entrust head coach Mike McCarthy with the role of offensive play-caller. Jones said these moves were about creating an offense that enhanced Prescott’s playing style and maximized his potential to win games on the field.
In a recent interview with 96.7 The Ticket, Jerry Jones shared his optimism about the changes to the Cowboys’ offense, emphasizing that it’s designed to be “Dak-friendly.”
“He’s going to have an offensive line that is going to be able to protect him better, their spacing is narrower, which is conducive to protection,” Jones explained. “He’s going to have more opportunities to dump the ball off to the backs. He’s going to have less to do before the snap, and less to read after the snap. The receivers are going to be less dependent upon reading the d-back and Dak reading the d-back. It’s going to be more about being at a spot where they should be. The [combination] of all of it, and all of it is adjustments, not dramatic changes.“
Prescott faces high expectations to lead the Cowboys to success this season. Jones and the Cowboys are throwing their full support behind Prescott, pouring resources into creating an offense that caters to his strengths and elevates his game—the 2022 season, consumed by injury and inconsistency for Prescott, led the league in interceptions despite missing five games. Backup quarterback Cooper Rush filled in for the starting role in Prescott’s absence and finished with a 4-1 record. Many fans wondered if Prescott could return to his peak form. The Cowboys’ dedication to building a Dak-friendly offense indicates their belief in his ability to thrive under the right conditions.
However, as with any significant changes to a team’s playbook and coaching staff, the success of the revised offense hinges on execution and adaptability. If the Cowboys fail to achieve the desired results with the new offensive approach, meaning a deep playoff run, more significant changes may be in store for the team.
