Golden State Valkyries Give Injury Update Ahead of Season Opener On Kate Martin
OAKLAND, CA — Golden State Valkyries guard Kate Martin is rehabbing a grade‑two right quadriceps strain suffered April 28, the team said.
A grade-two strain, characterized by a partial tear of muscle fibers, generally has a recovery period of two to four weeks. However, the duration may differ depending on the severity of the injury and the athlete’s reaction to treatment. The Valkyries’ medical team has placed Martin on a supervised rehabilitation program, and she will be reassessed daily as trainers evaluate her strength, range of motion, and readiness for sport-specific activities.
Martin’s status has immediate roster implications. Golden State opens the regular season on the road against the Seattle Storm on May 5. If Martin isn’t cleared for that game, the next target would be the Valkyries’ home opener at Chase Center on May 10 against the Phoenix Mercury. Returning by May 10 would place Martin at the early end of the typical two-to-four-week recovery window and allow several additional full-intensity practice days, provided her recovery proceeds as expected.
The Valkyries have emphasized caution with soft‑tissue injuries, prioritizing full functional return over a rushed comeback. Martin’s progress will depend on how her quad responds to progressive loading, anti‑inflammatory measures, and the sport‑specific conditioning that prepares a guard for the quick lateral movements and sprinting demands of the WNBA.
Golden State’s depth at guard offers some roster flexibility while Martin recovers, but her return would be a meaningful boost for head coach Natalie Nakase’s rotation if she can rejoin the lineup at or near full strength.
This is Martin’s third season in the WNBA and her second season with the Golden State Valkyries.
