LOS ANGELES — With the news of the Los Angeles Sparks parting ways with their General Manager, Reagan Pebley, on Sunday, with just three weeks ahead of the trade deadline, the team announced that assistant general managers Zach Knowlton and Nate Nielsen will resume the duties for the remainder of the season. This move appears to place even more pressure on current head coach Lynne Roberts to make the playoffs this season for the first time in six seasons. More than that, the goal is not just to reach the playoffs, but to win the first-round matchup and avoid a sweep.

If the Sparks ownership is serious about turning this franchise around, then one name should be on their list of candidates should be Basketball Hall of Famer Swin Cash. Cash was a phenomenal WNBA player and has worked in front-office operations with the New Orleans Pelicans. She served six seasons in the team’s front office as Vice President of Basketball Operations and Team Development, and was then promoted to Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations in June 2024. As the current Prime Video sports analyst, Cash has the knowledge to lead a WNBA team to greater heights. She could also earn the trust of players and the coaching staff as they work toward a championship mindset. Cash brings leadership and focus. the ability to make tough decisions for the betterment of the franchise. The Sparks last appeared in the WNBA Finals in 2017 and won their last championship in 2016, led by Candace Parker, Nneka Ogwumike, and Chelsea Gray, against their rival Minnesota Lynx. Ten years of that Finals appearance drought has been long enough, especially with the team’s brand new state-of-the-art practice facility scheduled to open in 2027.

The possibility of bringing a championship back to Los Angeles in the next few years is realistic. In addition to filling the General Manager role, the head coaching spot also would need to be filled. Lynne Roberts knows basketball, and given her coaching experience, I wouldn’t be surprised if a new administration retained her services. If Roberts’ key card became inactive, then there is a list of candidates who could fill the role on the sidelines. The candidates that could or should be reviewed are former Chicago Sky head coach and current WNBA analyst Teresa Weatherspoon, former WNBA champion and current CBS Sports analyst Lisa Leslie, current Indiana Fever assistant coach Brianna January, and current Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach and former WNBA player Lindsey Harding. Building a true identity for this team and creating the right culture is crucial to the team’s success and organizational development.

If Cash and ownership make the right decisions together, they could produce massive results like those experienced by other teams such as the Minnesota Lynx, the Las Vegas Aces, and the New York Liberty, to name a few. This success would bring championships and increased financial value, making Los Angeles a desirable destination for big-name free agents beyond just enjoying the sun and visiting the incredible beaches along the Southern California coastline. They would have an organization that settles for nothing less than a championship mentality and the will to win at all costs. A winning franchise also attracts more nationally televised games and celebrity notoriety at home games, which is essential in Los Angeles.

It all starts with making the right decisions in the front office, developing an incredible scouting department, hiring the best head coach and staff for the job, and ultimately acquiring the right players to buy in for the task at hand. This franchise is full of promise, opportunity, and room for growth. Only time will reveal what happens for the remainder of this season, but it should be a very active offseason for the decision-makers at the Los Angeles Sparks and their future.
